There are many misunderstandings about chess and draughts. That in the Middle Ages chess was a very popular game for instance, and that draughts did not yet exist in that time. If you cherish this thought, then look to the miniature below (taken from the French romance “Lancelot du lac” from about 1470) . Tristan and Iseult (Isolde), one of the most tragic love couples in our literature, are playing a board game. Which one? Chess, is our first thought. Wrong! The two put the pieces on the squares of one color: Tristan and Iseult are playing draughts.

Het barst van de misverstanden over schaken en dammen. Dat schaken in de middeleeuwen zo’n populair spel was bijvoorbeeld, en dat dammen toen nog niet bestond. O nee? Kijk dan eens goed naar bovenstaande miniatuur van omstreeks 1470 uit de Franse roman “Lancelot du lac”. Tristan en Isolde, een der meest tragische liefdesparen uit de literatuur, spelen een bordspel. Welk? Ze schaken, is onze eerste indruk. Mis! De twee hebben alle stukken op de velden van één kleur gezet: Tristan en Isolde dammen.
